In the fall of 1862, after the great victories of the Seven Days and the Second
Manassas, the Confederates began their only campaign in which in both the eastern
and western armies attacked in concert. This is the story of that western
campaign.
The campaign in the east would result in the single bloodiest day of the war
and in the west a confrontation in Kentucky that for the number of troops involved
was just as horrific. The battle of Perryville would be the South’s best
hopes of winning the war. What happened there made everything that came afterwards
