"Sports Innview With Ann Liguori"
Ann Liguori Biography
Ann Liguori, as a leader in the sports broadcasting and marketing industries,
(having had great success as a sports talk show host, interviewer, producer,
reporter and journalist for radio, television and print media outlets), has
been ahead of her time. From her childhood days competing in sports with the
boys, (earning 16 Varsity letters in High School), and playing on her high school
boy’s tennis team because they did not have a girl’s team at the
time, Ann has spent a good part of her career, paving the way for women in sports
and sports broadcasting. She is the President of her own television sports production
company and owner of the award-winning "Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori"
weekly television series, seen on regional sports networks throughout the country.
The show has aired since 1989 (Mickey Mantle was her first interview) and the
show is the longest-running, weekly sports show on cable, hosted, owned and
produced by a woman. Ann has acquired a library of over 600 half-hour interviews
on video with legends in sports, entertainment and business. Liguori has become
one of the top interviewers in the business and is known for asking tough questions
in a respectful way. As a producer for many of her shows, she also books the
top names and is able to secure some of the most difficult interviews. And on
many of her shows, she plays golf with major stars - - while simultaneously
interviewing them - - using golf as a "window into the souls" of her
guests.
In 2001, Ann became the first woman in sports media to be honored with the Association
for Women in Communication’s "Headliner’s Award," previously
awarded to Katherine Graham, Barbara Walters, Sylvia Porter and Gail Sheehy,
to name a few. The award is AWC’s highest honor bestowed upon a professional
member, and is presented on the basis of recent national or international accomplishments.
Last year, her "Sports Innerview" show was named the winner of the
Media Award in the "Television" category by the International Network
of Golf (ING), a media-based networking organization with more than 1,000 members.
Ann was also recently honored with the "Trailblazer’s Award"
from the National Association of Women Business Owners, Long Island Chapter.
Ann also co-hosted "Golf 2000 with Peter Jacobsen," a nationally-syndicated
golf magazine television show in which she booked, produced and appeared in
the celebrity golf segment each week. Ann also was the first woman to host and
produce her own weekly, prime-time series for The Golf Channel. "Conversations
with Ann Liguori," featured Ann golfing with and interviewing stars such
as Celine Dion, Joe Pesci, Sylvester Stallone, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Dan Quayle,
Charles Barkley, the late Charles Schulz and many more. Ann booked all the guests
for the show and hosted it. Her company produced the show. In addition, Ann
is a much sought-after corporate spokesperson and motivational speaker, addressing
a variety of groups at conventions, book signings, universities, golf events
and other venues.
Ann is one of only two original WFAN Radio sports talk show hosts still on the
air at the New York station, which was the first in the nation to go to an all-sports
format in 1987. Her Sunday evening show (9pm-1am) features interviews with top
sports personalities, including athletes, coaches, columnists and agents, plus
a live chat session (on annliguori.com), as well as calls from listeners. She
is the golf and tennis correspondent for WFAN and each year covers The Masters,
U.S. Open (Golf and Tennis), the British Open, Ryder Cup, NYC Marathon and other
assignments for the station. Ann has covered five Olympics for network radio
as a show host and reporter, including the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games, the
1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, the 1996 Atlanta Summer
Games and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where she reported on alpine
skiing for CBS Radio/Westwood One, doing live play-by-play of the men's and
women's downhill competitions. "A Passion for Golf - Celebrity Musings
About the Game" is Ann's book featuring a collection of interviews she
has done while on the golf course with some of the most successful celebrities
in sports, Hollywood, music and business. Ann has also produced for the Audio
Book Club, "A Passion for Life, Celebrity Musings from the Fairways,"
which is an audio version of some of her top interviews.
Ann has written a celebrity golf column for the Sports Section of USA TODAY
and has contributed to "W" Magazine, "Golf Travel & Leisure,"
"The Masters Journal" and other sports publications. Ann hosts the
Ann Liguori American Cancer Society Golf Classic every May at the Westhampton
Country Club on Long Island, which has become one of the premier events to attend
in The Hamptons and has raised millions of dollars for ACS in the six years
she has hosted it. Ann plays in numerous celebrity/charity golf tournaments,
served on the Board of Trustees for the National Academy of TV Arts and Sciences,
is on the Advisory Board of the Women’s Sports Foundation, is on the Board
of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of South Florida (USF)
where she has established an endowed scholarship in memory of her brother Jim.
She is also a USF Alumni Board Member. Ann serves on the Advisory Board of the
Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and hosts a series of "Games of
Summer" sports interviews there which are taped for her syndicated Sports
Innerview show.
Ann was recently among the first class from her Brecksville High School in
Ohio to be inducted into the Brecksville High School Alumni Hall of Fame, joining
the Mayor of the town and three previous Mayors who were also inducted. Ann
was named "Woman of the Year" at the Caitlin Memorial Golf Tournament
at the Hackensack Country Club, was the Honoree at the 2003 Westhampton Beach
Performing Arts Center Golf Tournament and the Honoree at the 2003 Coalition
on Child Abuse & Neglect Black Tie Gala.
ANN LIGUORI CONTINUES A CAREER OF FIRSTS IN SPORTS BROADCASTING
A history of '"Women in TV Sports" would not be complete without highlighting
Ann Liguori. Here’s why:
• Ann Liguori established her own sport’s television production
company when she formed Ann Liguori Productions, Inc. in 1989.
• Ann is the owner, producer and host of the longest-running sports show
in television history hosted by a woman - - "Sports Innerview with Ann
Liguori." The series, which has been airing weekly on cable networks since
1989, was created by Liguori - - and her first interview was with Mickey Mantle.
Since then, she has interviewed a ''who's who" in the sports, entertainment,
business and public service fields, creating an archives list of more than 600
guests from Nancy Lopez to Norman Schwartzkopf. (See her archives at www.annliguori.com.)
• At a time when women were virtually invisible in TV sports, Liguori
created her own program, shopped it on Madison Avenue and acquired national
sponsors, produced the show, booked the guests and distributed it on cable networks
throughout the country. Fourteen years later, the show continues to air weekly
in 40 million households.
• Ann was the first woman to host a sports call-in show on WFAN/New York,
the first radio station to go to an all-sports format back in 1987. Ann continues
to host a weekly, four-hour, sports call-in show on WFAN on Sunday evenings
from 9pm - 1AM., where she talks baseball, football, basketball, hockey and
top issues in sports and takes phone calls from her fans.
• Ann is also WFAN's correspondent at major golf and tennis tournaments,
including golf’s Masters, US Open, PGA •hampionship and Ryder Cup
and tennis’ US Open at Flushing Meadow.
• Ann has covered five Olympics (two Summer and three Winter Games) for
the network radio rights holders. Her duties have ranged from hosting shows
to reporting from venues such as track and field, figure skating, gymnastics,
basketball and alpine skiing.
• Ann was the first woman to host and produce a prime-time series on The
Golf Channel. Her show, "Conversations with Ann Liguori," featured
Ann interviewing top personalities in sports, entertainment, business and public
life about their success stories and their passion for golf. The show was produced
by Ann Liguori Productions, Inc., and aired the first three years of the Channel's
inception.
• Ann is the author of "A Passion for Golf, Celebrity Musings About
the Game" . . . and also produced the audio book version, "A Passion
for Life, Celebrity Musings from the Fairways."
