RAISING
THE BAMBOO CURTAIN
– VIETNAM, BURMA, AND CAMBODIA
2 x 60 minutes
Available for Worldwide Broadcast and DVD
Take a fresh look at the history, people, and cultures of
Vietnam, Burma, and Cambodia. Narrated by Martin Sheen.
Episode 1: Awakening Vietnam - Martin Sheen
narrates this fascinating look at a nation rising above its
war-torn past to embrace a promising future. After more than
four decades of war, the Vietnamese are intent on economic
reinvention and rekindled interest in their cultural identity
and heritage. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, previously called
Saigon, have become boomtowns of capitalist energy, attracting
waves of investment signalling Vietnam's emergence as a major
Asian economic force. Awakening Vietnam examines a country
putting the past to rest, to awaken a prosperous future.
Episode 2: Emerging Burma and Cambodia -
Outsiders have only just recently begun to travel more freely
in Burma, a country that all but closed it's borders in 1930.
Visitors can now admire the cultural treasures of this profoundly
Buddhist country: Rangoon's Shwedagon Temple, the floating
island gardens of Inle Lake, and the 2,000 abandoned temples
on the Plains of Pagan. Cambodia is slowly recovering from
the genocidal ravages of the Khmer Rouge which all but tore
the heart out of a people whose civilization dates back 6,000
years. Visit the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat, a 200-acre
city of temples whose ancient stones rise out of the jungle
to sustain the spirit of Cambodia, and its hope for a brighter
future.
